Window treatments

Blinds, shutters and draperies, made in-house in DeLand

Window treatments since 1964, with sample books in the showroom and all materials made in-house.

Where the Florida sun gets to a window first

Direct sun is hard on anything hanging in a window. Fabric fades along the folds and across the panels that face the glass. Slats go brittle and crack at the ends. Vertical blinds curl, hang crooked in the track and stop closing evenly. Drapery that was never cut for its window pools on the floor or stops short of the sill, and the whole room looks like a guess.

Hunt's has been providing window treatments since 1964, and the pattern repeats: a treatment picked for how it looked on a sample card, not for the light it will face every afternoon. The fix starts with choosing for the window you actually have.

From conception to finish, starting at the sample books

"From conception to finish" is the shop's own phrase for how it handles window treatments, and it begins at the showroom on International Speedway Blvd. The sample books are there to be handled. Hold a fabric or a slat finish in daylight, set it beside the furniture it will share a room with, and decide with the material in your hand.

Plantation blinds suit a window that needs adjustable light. Shutters keep a clean frame around the glass. Vertical blinds cover a wide door or a run of glass. Draperies and valances soften the room. Side panels frame the window on either side. Cornices finish the top edge.

The shop says all materials made in-house, so a treatment is built in the shop, not ordered in as a finished product. All of our workmanship is guaranteed, and customers who write reviews thank Jessica for helping choose material and Jerry for the craftsmanship.

Keeping a treatment good-looking in the sun

Dust louvers and slats on a regular schedule with a soft cloth or brush, working along the slat. Dust that sits on a hot slat bakes on, and scrubbing a finished slat does more harm than the dust did. Fabric treatments want a vacuum with a brush attachment, not a wet cloth.

Ask about lining when you choose the cloth. A lining behind a drapery or valance takes the first hours of sun in place of the face fabric, so the colour you picked in the showroom lasts longer in the window. It is a decision made at the sample books, not something to add later.

If a chair or sofa is being re-covered for the same room, choose the cornice or valance cloth in the same visit. One trip puts both sets of samples on the same table, and the room finishes as one decision instead of two.

A new valance rarely lives alone in a room. Pair it with a chair that is being re-covered and the cloth can follow through. See furniture upholstery for how the shop strips and rebuilds a piece.
